Operational Commissioning of The David E Kampe Tower – Penticton Regional Hospital

General | Medical Equipment Inventory | Operational Readiness

Over the last 10 years of business, The Readiness Group has had the pleasure of working with organizations across Canada to take their building plans from vision to activation.

On April 29, 2019, our operational commissioning consulting team hit a milestone mark of 12 official building handovers with the opening of the Penticton Regional Hospital’s (PRH) new David E. Kampe Tower.

The David E. Kampe Tower is a six-story tower that will bring modern standards of care to the residents of Penticton and South Okanagan. The new tower includes ambulatory care, surgical services, 84-inpatient beds in single-patient rooms, a new medical device reprocessing unit, new MRI and Nuclear Medicine equipment, space for the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine and a roof-top heliport. Its opening is followed by Phase 2 renovations to the existing hospital to allow for an expanded emergency department, pharmacy, and material management stores.

The Readiness Group worked with Interior Health Capital Planning Project Team, PRH Site Administration and staff on operational commissioning and developed a training and orientation plan. Monthly meetings with User Groups to do workflow analysis, clinical equipment training analysis, and workplan development. This culminated in a series of learning and performance activities including Day in the Life sessions, unit specific training, and performance support tools to enhance staff capacity and competence.

With unwavering support from The Readiness Group and IH Capital Planning Project team throughout operational commissioning, the site was prepared to transition clinical services despite minor building deficiencies. Aware of these minor set-backs, Project Team helped the User Groups prepare a contingency plan in areas where equipment functionality may be in question, simulated workflows and addressed staffing resources prior to move-in.

The Site Administrator commented: “It feels lived-in on Day 1” exemplifying the value of preparation on all levels of operational commissioning from building systems to operational workflows, staffing-up and change management.

The PRH David E. Kampe Tower project is a rewarding experience to top off our decade in operational commissioning and project management. This project seemed to have the right people in place to lead, the right amount of team and staff to dedicate to the project, and good comradery across all the project teams from design to construction to operational commissioning. Certainly a “Dream Team” befitting of a dream hospital for the Penticton community.
